Una specie esistente è anche nota dai reperti fossili; il Potamonautes niloticus è abbondante nei sedimenti del Miocene (6 milioni di anni fa ) del Lago Alberto. Specie estinte assegnate a Potamonautes sono note anche dal tardo Cretaceo del Niger.
Diffusione
È una famiglia di granchi d'acqua dolce endemica dell'Africa, comprese le isole del Madagascar, le Seychelles, Zanzibar, Mafia, Pemba, Bioko, São Tomé, Príncipe e l'isola di Sherbro. Alla famiglia Potamonautidae sono stati attribuiti resti fossili risalenti al tardo Miocene.
